When Your Check Engine Light Comes On

When people think of the electricity used by their vehicle's radio, power windows and other accessories it is often assumed the battery provides all of this power. While this is true when the car is not running, it is the alternator that actually creates the electrical power, which is then stored in the battery. It also helps get the car running by providing power to the spark plugs! If the alternator fails you will find yourself going nowhere fast. Here are 5 signs of alternator failure you should be aware of.

Dead Battery

Batteries can fail on their own but a bad alternator will cause the battery to drain and die since it isn't being recharged. If your battery does go dead (and you're positive you didn't leave the lights on) have the alternator checked when replacing the battery to be sure it doesn't happen again.

Dashboard Indicator

Many vehicles are equipped with several dashboard indicator lights to inform you of potential or actual problems. One of these lights likely reads GEN or ALT and this will usually be the first indication that the alternator is on its way out. Don't ignore this light even if you are not experiencing other symptoms.

Dim or Flickering Headlights

While the vehicle is running the alternator provides power to the headlights and other driving lights, so flickering or dim lighting is a strong indication that the alternator is having performance issues.

Electrical Accessory Failures

If you experience trouble operating the power windows or locks, dashboard lights, AC, radio or other accessories be sure to have the alternator tested. While there are other things that might be causing these troubles, it is one more thing to cross off the list of possibilities.

Hard Starts or Stalling

The alternator provides power to the spark plugs in order to ignite the gasoline in your motor. If the alternator is failing it likely won't be able to create enough power in the spark plugs to keep the pistons pumping, which will cause the car to stall or give you trouble starting the vehicle.

Anytime you experience electrical or starting trouble there is a good chance of a failing alternator.
