When Your Check Engine Light Comes On

While fuel prices have fallen in recent times, you still want to save every penny you possibly can at the pump. Just because prices are lower, doesn't mean they're not still putting a dent in your wallet. To save yourself those extra dollars, there are a few maintenance measures you can take to increase your fuel-efficiency. From changing out spark plugs to making sure your tires are properly inflated, there are a number of ways to help boost your gas mileage. Here's a look at five of those ways.

New Spark Plugs

Spark plugs create the tiny explosions that are necessary to get your pistons up and pumping. They ignite a mixture of air and fuel, but if they're dirty then they're prone to misfiring, thus reducing your fuel-efficiency.

Correct Fuel Grade

If your vehicle requires mid-grade or higher, you'll want to be sure to follow that requirement. It certainly can be tempting to save a few bucks on the lower grade fuel, but this can contribute to decreased fuel-efficiency and even engine trouble.

Replace Air Filter

Your car runs off of a mixture of air and gas. If the right amount of air can't get to the combustion chamber because of a clogged filter, then your engine might try to make up for it by burning up more gasoline.

Proper Tire Inflation

Rubber that is soft needs more power to roll forward. Therefore, under-inflated tires can reduce fuel-efficiency by some 25%.

Tight Gas Cap

If the cap isn't tightly sealed, then it's possible that gas will actually evaporate before it has a chance to be used.
