When Your Check Engine Light Comes On

Even if they have an older model car, people often don't stop to think about how, realistically, their automobile is going to experience mechanical problems at some point in the not-too-distant future. When it does happen, you want to have a reputable mechanic who can do exceptional work at a reasonable price. One of the systems in your car that will eventually need to be addressed is the transmission. There are several signs that your car is experiencing transmission problems. Here are four of those signs:

Fluid Leak

If puddles of an artificial liquid substance are pooling up in the area where you park your car, this is cause for suspicion. It doesn't necessarily mean that it's the transmission, but that is one possibility. And if the fluid is a red or brownish color, this could be a telltale sign. One way to help you determine whether your transmission fluid is leaking is by keeping an eye on the fluid levels. You may want to add more as needed, but just be sure to keep in mind that overfilling can also have negative effects.

Burning odor

A burning smell coming from under your hood could suggest a number of things, but one potential issue that it could signify is a problem with your transmission. This could mean that your transmission fluid is running too hot, making it difficult for it to work properly, and potentially leading to increased friction, which could lead to significant problems. Again, you'll want to keep an eye on your fluid levels to ensure that you have the adequate supply to be doing the job effectively. And if you happen to be in for an oil change, be sure to have them take a quick look at your fluid levels.

Stalling

This could be an indication of faulty transmission lines. If your car is stalling out, you'll want to get to the shop quickly, before the problems worsens.

Gears slipping

This is where things get serious. If all the sudden your car just slips out of gear for no apparent reason, then that is a classic indicator of a transmission problem. At this point, you'll want to be sure that you get into the shop as soon as possible. When you don't have control over your gears you are no longer able to maintain control over your car, which puts you and other drivers in a potentially dangerous position.
