5 Signs of Brake Problems That Should Not Be Ignored

What do you do as you approach a stop sign or red light in your car? How about when you're about to drive around a sharp corner? You hit the brakes to come to a stop or control your vehicles speed to ensure your own safety, that of your passengers and other people on the road. We do this almost subconsciously because we know that the brakes ability to stop are vehicles is what prevents us from getting into accidents. That is why it is important to pay attention for these signs of brake failure so that you can have them repaired by a professional mechanic if you experience any trouble.

Grinding or Squealing Brakes

Your brakes are designed to work in silence so if you hear a grinding or squealing noise when you hit the brake pedal you certainly have some sort of braking issue. There are two common reasons for this noise. The first is because some brake pads are designed to squeal as a warning sign when your pads are getting low. The second reason is because your brake pads are completely worn down and metal is grinding on metal, which is very dangerous.

Car Pulls when Braking

If your vehicle tries to go left or right as you brake you will want to visit the mechanic. Common reasons for this include uneven wear of the brake pads, impurities in the brake fluid or a stuck wheel cylinder. All of these can cause catastrophic brake failure if not quickly taken care of.

Car Vibrates when Braking

Your vehicle should smoothly come to a stop as you brake so if you experience odd vibrations coming from the brake pedal, steering wheel or the car as a whole you may have warped rotors. Rotors are what the brake pads grab to slow your vehicle so if the surface is not smooth it greatly reduces your ability to brake effectively.

Brake Pedal Hits the Floor

There should be some resistance when you hit the brake pedal. If it feels soft or spongy or is easily pushed to the floor it could mean your brake pads are very low. However it could also be something much worse, such as air in the brake lines or a brake fluid leak.

Brake Fluid Leak

Probably the worst thing that can happen to your brake system is a brake fluid leak. It may be caused by a damaged wheel cylinder or loose brake line coupling. If your vehicle loses brake fluid it can cause your to lose all braking power. Brake fluid is generally a clearish brown color and leaks will accumulate near the wheels or under the brake master cylinder, depending on where the leak is.
