7 Check Engine Light Triggers

When the check engine light comes on, the impulse is often to worry that disaster is just around the corner. While this isn't necessarily the case, you'll still want to get to the shop for diagnostics so that you don't risk the emergence of a major problem that could've been prevented. Here's a look at seven issues that trigger the check engine light.

Bad Battery/Charging System

A failing battery can cause low voltage at the computer, which can then cause the check engine light to turn on.

Failing Spark Plugs

For older vehicles, spark plugs should be replaced every 30,000 miles or so. Vehicles that were manufactured post-2000 regularly can go 100,000 miles before plugs should be changed. It's important to promptly replace failing spark plugs so that your vehicle can achieve optimal performance and gas mileage.

Faulty Mass Airflow Sensor

Mass airflow sensors monitor the amount of incoming air and the quantity of fuel with which it should be injected.

Failing Catalytic Convertor

The catalytic converter does the important task of turning carbon monoxide into an emission that isn't as damaging to the environment. Though this can be costly to replace, it's important to take care of it.

Bad Oxygen Sensor

Oxygen sensors keep tabs on the quantity of unburned oxygen that's in the exhaust system. If there are problems with an oxygen sensor, catalytic converter trouble can consequently arise.

Loose/Missing Gas Cap

Though it might seem like a very minor concern, a poorly-fitting gas cap can actually cause the check engine light to illuminate.

Faulty Ignition Coil

Ignition coils are essential to generating the spark necessary for vehicles to fire up on all cylinders. Extreme weather sometimes causes ignition coils to go bad.
