7 Common Types of Car Trouble that Cause No-Start

As soon as you notice that your vehicle is struggling to fire up, you'll want to have a mechanic conduct an inspection. If you delay, the problem could soon worsen to the point that you can't get your engine started at all and you end up stranded. Here are seven common reasons that cars don't start.

Clogged Fuel Filter

When a fuel filter gets completely clogged, enough fuel may not be able to reach your engine to bring it to life. You can prevent this problem by getting to the shop for fuel filter replacement every 20,000 to 30,000 miles.

Bad Fuel Pump

With a faulty fuel pump, gas may not be able to move from the tank to the engine. Signs of fuel pump trouble include: worsening acceleration, higher engine temperature, decreasing MPGs, and sputtering when driving at high speeds.

Faulty Starter

If you stick the key in the ignition and turn it, but then get nothing except a clicking noise, then you've got a well-known sign of starter trouble. Another sign of a starter problem is that your dash lights will come on but your engine won't fire up.

Battery/Charging System Issues

You should get at least three years of reliable use out of a new car battery. But if yours dies at an earlier age, then you could be dealing with a failing alternator---unless of course you left your headlights on!

Issue with Distributor Cap

Moisture that gets beneath the distributor cap can stop sufficient voltage from reaching your spark plugs.

Dirty Fuel Injectors

Dirty fuel injectors can prevent the combustion chamber from taking in enough fuel to get the engine started. A fuel additive can help with removing pollutants from injectors and intake valves.

Failing Ignition Switch

A failing ignition switch can prevent the starter solenoid from receiving sufficient power. An ignition switch problem may cause dash lights to flicker.
