8 Ways to Improve Fuel-Efficiency

Gas prices are forecasted to stay high throughout the year, making it all the more important that your car is able to get maximum MPGs. Here are eight simple tips for boosting gas mileage.

New Fuel Filter

To prevent contaminants from hurting performance and fuel-efficiency, you'll want to get a new fuel filter every 20,000 miles or so.

Replace Air Filter

It's best to get a new air filter every 15,000 miles so that the proper amount of air can reach the combustion chamber. This will prevent the engine from burning up an excessive amount of gas to compensate for a shortage of air.

Correct Oil

You'll want to always use the specific type of oil that is recommended for your vehicle. Using oil of a different weight could lead to increased friction, which could then cause your engine to work harder, thus reducing gas mileage.

Replace Spark Plugs

When gunked-up plugs repeatedly misfire, a lot of fuel can end up going to waste. Cars made after 2000 can often go 100,000 miles before their plugs need to be replaced, while older automobiles usually need new plugs more regularly.

Correct Fuel Grade

For cars that are designed to be filled up with mid-grade gas or better, it's important to adhere to this requirement. If you don't, gas mileage could worsen and engine trouble could emerge.

Accurate Tire Inflation

Tire pressure generally needs to remain somewhere between 30 and 35 psi, but it's worth checking to see the specifications for your tires. If your tires are underinflated, your car will have to expend more power to get them to roll, which can hurt gas mileage.

Use Fuel Additive

A fuel additive can help with eliminating pollutants from injectors and intake valves. But it's important to make sure you don't overuse the additive.

Tightly Secured Gas Cap

If your gas cap is loose or missing, then fuel may evaporate before your engine even gets the chance to run on it.
